North Side or North Shore?

Welcome to Pittsburgh. Few cities in America can match it for diversity. The city is comprised of some 90 neighborhoods. Opposite Downtown, located to the north of the Allegheny River and Ohio River, is an area known as North Side (sometimes written or spelled as Northside).

The term “North Side” does not refer to a particular neighborhood, but rather a collection of some 18 neighborhoods, some of which are named Manchester, Spring Hill, Troy Hill, and Allegheny West, just to name a few, the latest of which is North Shore.

For over a hundred years North Side was used as an all-inclusive statement for these many neighborhoods. Today’s North Side boasts museums, sports stadiums, hotels, housing, restaurants, and even a gambling casino. There has been an explosion of growth and development in recent years, much of it along the rivers, hence the term North Shore.
