An Anniversary of Sorts Each year, Point magazine prints a schedule of focuses for advertisers and those who may have an interest in that sort of thing. This year’s February issue is the 20th Anniversary issue of the annual Destination Guide. In addition to our normal distribution to hotels and information centers, this issue is mailed to Newspaper Travel Editors who in turn do blurbs in their Travel Sections. Readers then contact us for this issue which in turn broadens the exposure base for advertisers as the issue continues to be mailed out long after the cover date. Well, I just couldn’t believe it’s been 20 years since printing the first guide. That first issue, and for several years after, was known as the Meeting & Planners Issue.
Some of the advertisers in that issue included Piccolo Piccolo Ristorante, Margaritaville, Servico (hotels), Jake’s Above the Square, Christopher’s Restaurant, Klein’s, Tivoli, Pompeo’s, Brandy’s, and Al Monzo’s Palace Inn, to name just a few. The Palace Inn was always a special favorite of mine as Al Monzo was the first advertiser in Pittsburgh Point magazine. When I originally started the magazine in 1981, it was known as Pointe. By the way, if you didn’t guess it by now, all of the above named advertisers and businesses are gone, most long gone. However, others appeared in that first issue and have survived and prospered as we have. They include The Sheraton Hotel at Station Square, S. W. Randall Toyes & Giftes, and The Spaghetti Warehouse. Events of note that February 1990 included Mike Tyson being defeated by a knock out by James “Buster” Douglas for the World Heavyweight Boxing Crown, Nelson Mandela being released from Victor Verster Prison, near Cape Town, South Africa, after 27 years behind bars, and Exxon and its shipping company were indicted on five criminal counts after the Exxon Valdez oil spill. That’s just a little of what happened twenty years ago this month. Meanwhile, we hope that you find this year’s Destination Guide both interesting and helpful. If you’re a visitor to Pittsburgh for the first time, welcome. And if you’ve been here before, welcome back. Once again, welcome. A. Robert Scott Current
