PUBLISHER'S PAGE - Thoughts from a Traveler

America has so many beautiful cities and I’ve been fortunate to see more than my share. I was reminded of this once again during a recent trip to the west coast that took my wife and me to San Diego, California and out of the country on a cruise to the Mexican Riviera.

The landing pattern brought us right in over downtown. The view was impressive indeed.

The hotel for a one night stay was downtown and had a view of the bay with planes coming in right over us and Interstate 5.

The flight from Pittsburgh was non-stop and first-class…the seats and the section that we were in that is.

When it came time to eat, the menu choice was a turkey sandwich or Mediterranean Salad. My wife chose salad and I the sandwich. Well, and this brings a smile to my face as I write this, the sandwich was about four or five inches high with all roll top and bottom with just slivers of ingredients. Then in the middle of eating, the flight attendant came by to show us the label on the bottle of wine that our drinks came from. Like we were supposed to be impressed… especially after the sandwich (smile again). As the flight attendant Gwendolyn said to us, first-class isn’t what it used to be.

No matter where I travel, it’s always nice to see old friends. Going down to breakfast at the hotel in San Diego, there setting on the table was the friend that I find so many places when I travel, even when out of the country. There on the table was a touch of home and my friend from Pittsburgh, a bottle of Heinz Ketchup.

I chuckle at that thought also. It reminded me of a time in Lisbon, Portugal, when in a fancy restaurant, I asked for ketchup and the waitress brought me a bottle of Heinz. You see, I can’t eat breakfast, eggs that is, without ketchup.

Well, if that’s not enough about ketchup, guess what brand the cruise line was serving? You got it!

I think it was Mark Twain that said something like the people who make the best travelers are those who have a home to return to. I agree with that.

Pittsburgh is my home and I take pride in saying where I am from.

On my return flight, I gave up the window seat to my wife. As we were about to land, she commented on the snow that greeted our arrival.

But that was last month. That was March, this is April. Spring is here.
