South Side Focus - A Unique Neighborhood

Anyone from Pittsburgh or who has lived in the area knows that the city is composed of neighborhoods… some ninety plus. But even those who are from the area probably have never been to all of them. This month’s issue will direct you to one of the most prominent of them.

You’ll find the South Side Focus on pages 19-21.

Perhaps one of the best known city neighborhoods is South Side. Originally known as Birmingham, South Side had at its core the steel mills and the church.

Coursing through the heart of the district is East Carson Street, a throwback in its look and appearance to the 50s. With its mix of shops and galleries, fine restaurants to fast-food, bars & taverns, throw in some hardware stores, bakeries, novelty boutiques, tattoo parlors, well, you get the idea. And yet all seem to happily coexist. This section of Pittsburgh is unique indeed.

For a different city view, try ascending the South Side Slopes for a view from up above.

At opposite ends of East Carson Street are two separate shopping, dining, and entertainment destinations.

Across from Downtown at the end of the Smithfield Street Bridge and along the Monongahela River on Carson Street is Station Square.

On East Carson Street, going east, and as the street numbers increase, you’ll come to South Side Works.

It’s on East Carson Street, in the middle of this Pittsburgh neighborhood where you’ll find Fat Head’s.

Opened almost 17 years ago in September of 1992, Fat Head’s was the brainchild and inspiration of Glenn Benigni.

Known and appreciated by locals for years, visitors and out-of-towners will find that this popular neighborhood bar and grill captures some of the flavor that is Pittsburgh.

A final note. Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey club on winning the Stanley Cup.

The young team won with stars like Fleury, Crosby, Malkin, Staal, and Mr. Clutch, Max Talbot. They won the seventh and deciding game against the Detroit Red Wings.

Despite being down in the series two games to none and then three games to two, the Pens avenged last year’s ouster by these same Red Wings by doing the same to them in their building in Detroit.

The Steelers win the Super Bowl in February and the Pens take the Cup in June.

Not too bad.
