Fat Head’s—Must See Dining This month’s issue is the second of two back-to-back issues that focus on the South Side of Pittsburgh. South Side is perhaps one of the better and most popular of the more than ninety neighborhoods of Pittsburgh. Originally known as Birmingham, it was a mill section of town, not unlike many others that could be found up and down the Monongahela River. South Side, like the other towns, was anchored by the church as well as the steel mill or factory.
It’s here and off the side streets where one will find the stores and galleries, bars and taverns, boutiques and small mom and pop shops, as well as a very wide and varied selection of restaurants to choose from. It’s here that sixteen years ago, in September of 1992 that Fat Head’s was opened by Glenn Benigni. As Brandy’s in the Strip District or Froggy’s in Market Square once were and now long defunct, or the more famous Cheers in Boston, Fat Head’s has become an icon in Pittsburgh and on the South Side. Several months ago I was looking for a place to take some guests out to eat before going to a hockey game. Looking for some outside input, I asked an attendant at one of the info desks for some suggestions. The very first mentioned was Fat Head’s on the South Side. Of course that pleased me very much since Fat Head’s has been a long time advertiser in the magazine. Come to think of it, maybe that’s what gave them the idea since Point is available there. We’re very happy to once again have this fun and happening place featured on this month’s cover. There’s much going on in the city this month. CLO has West Side Story, the Pirates will be at PNC Park, and football gets started with pre-season for the Steelers, and the Pitt Panthers open their season at the end of the month. And if you’re looking for someplace
special before or after any events, why
