Seattle vs. Alaska They call it awesome and so it is. I’ve been given to traveling for much of my life. And with all of the traveling and places I’ve been, one place that had eluded me was Alaska. No more. After seeing some glaciers somewhere in Alaska on one of the travel channels, my wife told me that she’d like to see that. Our view of Alaska was by way of a round-trip cruise out of Seattle, Washington aboard a vessel of Princess Cruises. We saw mountain grandeur, snow caps and mountains lush with vegetation that came right down to the sea. Wildlife consisted of numerous bald eagle sightings and one whale sighting. Alaska, with stops at Ketchikan, Juneau, and the last stop at Skagway, was truly spectacular. In Skagway, we took a round trip train ride up to White Pass Summit aboard The White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad. It was a truly dazzling excursion while aboard one of the last remaining narrow gauges in North America. Before returning to the United States via Seattle, the final stop on the itinerary was Victoria, British Columbia, the capital of the province. We found it quaint and interesting while riding on the second level of a double-deck sightseeing bus. As I said earlier, the cruise began in Seattle and it ended there. Now here’s the rub. People in Seattle are still crying over the Seattle Seahawks losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the last Super Bowl. At the beginning of the cruise, upon seeing we were from Pittsburgh, the clerk processing us for Princess Cruises loudly exclaimed that Pittsburgh didn’t deserve to win the Super Bowl. Now, after leaving the ship and about to board a bus to the airport, another clerk who recognized me from before, loudly exclaimed that Pittsburgh paid off the officials. Well, I’d had enough and wished her better luck next time, and told her….if they’d had a tight end who could catch the ball, they might have had a better chance to win. C’mon Seattle fans, get a clue or a life. It’s all part of the game. Incidentally, upon further scrutiny by league officials and members of the sports media, all the controversial calls, except for possibly one, were considered to have been correctly made. Anyway, yea Alaska. Boo Seattle! And oh yes, yea Pittsburgh Steelers. One final note on this trip. In case you haven’t noticed, traveling isn’t what it used to be. My wife got through the security inspections at Pittsburgh and Philadelphia without a hitch. However, the security check at the Seattle airport for the return trip was another matter. With the same carry-on as before, taken from my wife during this check was her eye shadow powder, lipstick, and lotion and perfume by Vera Wang. Go figure. Seattle. Ugh!! A. Robert Scott
