PUBLISHER'S PAGE - Thoughts from a Trip Although Pittsburgh Point magazine is a wholly privately and independently owned company, it has for some time been affiliated with Key Magazines. Key and its affiliates are in many major U.S. markets. Key Magazine had its annual publishers meeting last month in Las Vegas. I enjoy these meetings and this time was no exception. My wife went with me a couple of days early to mix pleasure with business. Arriving in Vegas and about to get a cab, I recognized the cab driver. “It’s the HBO taxi driver,” I announced excitedly to my wife and anyone else within earshot...yes it was. Out of 1600 cabs in Las Vegas, we got into the cab of Rita Scott, the driver of the cab in which HBO films passengers who divulge and indulge in the most personal discussions and behavior. I guess it’s a kind of X-rated Candid Camera. In a town full of celebrities, Rita, who migrated from New York City a few years ago, is a celebrity of sorts herself. After checking into our hotel, the first order of business was to check out the Venetian. Wow. The shops were really something. Thursday, our second day, we rented a car for 24-hours and headed out of town for Hoover Dam. I had missed this on another trip and made up mind I wasn’t going to let that happen again. We knew we were close when in the middle of the desert, we came upon Lake Mead, one of the world’s largest man-made lakes. Then, there it was. Hoover Dam. I’ve seen it on The Travel Channel, but television and pictures don’t do it justice. If the Grand Canyon is one of the most prominent natural wonders of the world, then Hoover Dam is one of the most significant man-made wonders of the world. On Friday we had breakfast at an IHOP (don’t have these in the ‘burgh). Then my wife spotted a Swap Meet where she did some Red Hat (smile) shopping. She really cruised through the place as we were under the gun to return the car rental without a penalty. That afternoon we visited Madame Tussaud’s Interactive Wax Attraction. That was fun. All in all, it was a good trip. Gambled and broke even. Everybody tells me that if you break even, you won. Oh yes, the business meeting went well. One final note. The month of November is when we celebrate Thanksgiving. Let us be grateful and give thanks for the blessings that are ours. Happy Thanksgiving! A. Robert Scott Current
