A Good Time to be Thankful The fan base across the country of the Pittsburgh Steelers is really phenomenal. I was made aware of this once again last month while watching the Steelers Sunday night game at San Diego. Although the two cities are separated by about twenty-five hundred miles, the black and gold was dominant in the stands. At one time, the Dallas Cowboys were known as America’s team. But I don’t know of any fan base that is stronger away from home than Pittsburgh. By the way, the Steelers lost that game at San Diego. But somebody wins and somebody loses. As some have said, the players on the other teams are on scholarship too. But that’s okay. Sports is entertainment and a diversion. If you have a life, you should know this. Besides, Pittsburgh did win the last Super Bowl and five winners out of forty isn’t bad. In Pittsburgh, sports is an important part of the fabric of life. Note, I said a part of. The cultural attractions here are also woven into the fabric. The Cultural District with Heinz Hall, Benedum Center, and O’Reilly Theater add to the charm and ambience of Pittsburgh, as does the Pittsburgh Symphony, Pittsburgh Public Theatre, and Civic Light Opera. In December, the Civic Light Opera again presents Charles Dickens’ timeless classic, A Christmas Carol, at the Byham Theater. There are many cool and neat things to do while visiting Pittsburgh.
Whether you’re Minnesota Fats or just an average pool player, Shootz Cafe & Billiards is worth a visit. Just across the Birmingham Bridge on East Carson Street in the happening Historical South Side, Shootz is the place. Walking in the door, the bar sets to your left and runs the length of the wall for thirty to forty feet. There’s plenty of room for dining, comfortable couches and plush chairs, and cozy fireplaces that draw you when the weather turns nasty. And oh yes, I don’t want to forget the 18 pool tables. Shootz daily food specials, together with 11 televisions, and three 8-foot projection screens make this a place to be come game day. One final thought. The fourth Thursday of this month is Thanksgiving. With that as a reminder, this time like most times is a good time to be thankful. A. Robert Scott
