Musings from a Trip

In late September, my wife and I traveled to Nashville for a business trip with other publishers and colleagues.

If you travel at all, especially by air, you’ve probably taken note of the many changes. It was said after September 11th that things would never be the same and that’s certainly proven to be true.

The security lines…and how did we ever get along without cell phones? It’s amazing how openly and loudly people let their business out while on a cell phone. I saw this in the waiting area at the Pittsburgh airport. Don’t you think loud talkers on cell phones come across as rather obnoxious? I think so.

I traveled comfortable, tennis shoes and a Steelers warm-up suit. Well… didn’t I get noticed. While in Nashville, we stayed at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel. An employee of the hotel had a name tag that said Pittsburgh below his name. Turns out he‘s from Bethel Park.

One incident that stands out in my mind was at an elevator when another guest commented on the Steelers. Standing in the rear of the elevator, ready to come out was a bellman. He joined in and offered, “Before I came to Nashville, I lived in Dallas, and there were two teams we hated. The Washington Redskins and the Pittsburgh Steelers.” He stood about 6’4” and looked as if he could have played for the Cowboys. I just smiled and walked away. Now I know what Steelers coach Mike Tomlin was talking about when he walked through a Baltimore airport in a Steelers warm-up suit. People began to boo and he realized the booing was for him. Football is serious business folks.

Nashville is known as Music City and attracts about 10 million visitors annually.

Our group enjoyed one evening at the world-famous Grand Ole Opry and saw Porter Waggoner and Charlie Pride, among others. Talk about a slice of Americana.

The last night was spent cruising the Cumberland River aboard the General Jackson Showboat where we enjoyed dinner and a show and the Nashville skyline.

All in all, an enjoyable trip and we got to see just a little of another wonderful American city.

About the Cover

Pittsburgh’s South Side is known for its many bars and restaurants, unique shops, and other places of business. Just across the Birmingham Bridge and on the main street of Carson Street is where Shootz Cafe & Billiards is located.

Featured on this month’s cover, Shootz is a great place to eat, watch some sports on television, shoot some pool, and maybe just hang out.
